In an interview on ABC Regional 639 Radio, President Ron Hay, welcomed the news on the signed Memorandum of Understanding between Arrium and the State Government, to work together to create a multi-user port facility at Whyalla.
Mr Hay said, this is a very positive piece of news and has the potential to open up a number of opportunities for consideration, to support not only this region, but in particular Whyalla’s economy.
With the mining activity currently taking place across the Eyre Peninsula, this is an important first step to potentially unlocking the door to the question of having a suitable facility, to ship from.
It is fair to say, said Mr Hay that for a number of years we have heard of the need to have a shared port facility in this region and the discussions which will now follow, may produce an appropriate outcome.
Although there is much negotiation to be had (which will take time), it is a positive action, which I believe some of the smaller mining companies will welcome, knowing that some of their future infrastructure needs may be accommodated.
Mr Hay said, even though we are experiencing lower commodity prices, along with the associated financial impacts, during a downturn such as this it is extremely important to progress these discussions, agree on outcomes and put in place appropriate infrastructure, so we have capability when we see the upturn again.
The Whyalla Chamber looks forward to the outcome and the opportunities that it may bring with it, for our businesses and the community as a whole.
