The 2013 Year in Reflection

The Whyalla Chamber of Commerce and Industry, comes towards the end of 2013, with a sense of achievement, said Vice President, Mr Ron Hay.

Over the past 12 months or so, the Executive committee, have been steadily moving forward and promoting the Chamber within a number of areas.

Members of our Executive, represent the Chamber on community and regional committees, our networking evenings and professional development forums have attracted a good level of attendance and delivered relevant information and discussion topics to enable business owners and managers to understand what changes may be taking place due to legislation or other influences and where they may access support from for example, said Mr Hay.

Another major association that the Chamber has entered into, has been a more relevant and formal relationship with the states leading business body, Business SA.

The Executive believes, this association has brought a number of benefits for our members, as well as the community in general said Mr Hay, with the main benefit being the ability to have direct contact with Nigel McBride, CEO of Business SA, when he comes to Whyalla for Business SA’s regional forums.

These forums have been a critical part of managing our businesses, as it provides that direct link to Business SA, enabling business owners and managers, to gain firsthand information on the business climate and trends, discussions with Government and the ability to share concerns and issues and providing the regional areas with a voice back into the bigger South Australia business community, said Mr Hay.

Another, but more recent highlight of the year was our Awards Dinner, which was attended by 170 persons. With the introduction of new awards and a good level of nominations across all award categories, the positive atmosphere was something to ‘bottle’ said Mr Hay.

The room décor and set up with a greater level of audio-visual, was well received by those who attended.
Mr Hay said, our corporate partnerships with our Diamond Sponsor Beyond Bank Australia, Platinum Sponsor BHP Billiton and Gold Sponsors Hood Sweeney and Arrium/OneSteel, along with a number of Silver and Bronze sponsors, enabled the Chamber to deliver a very professional evening to the business Community of Whyalla.

As a Chamber, we are also grateful of the support of Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula, for providing a business support training package to the New Business Venture of the Year, which will provide additional skills to assist in running their business, said Mr Hay.

One of the last activities the Executive was involved in for the year, was business planning, focussing on several key areas that the Executive believes will provide the basis to move to the next phase.

Mr Hay said, it has been a busy and rewarding year for the Chamber and with our President Allan Kane, taking up a new role this will also bring new opportunities for us in 2014.

As we head into the Festive Season, the Chamber would encourage the Whyalla Community to look for those Christmas gifts within our local outlets and minimise online purchasing, to make certain that we maintain a vibrant and sustainable shopping hub for this region and indeed our own community, said Mr Hay.

On behalf of our President Allan Kane and the Chamber Executive, I wish our members, the business community and the Whyalla community, a safe and happy festive season and the Chamber looks forward to meeting up in 2014
